May 20, 2025
Woburn Sands has a new Town Mayor. Following the conclusion of Cllr Gwyn Jones one-year term, a new Mayor, David Hopkins has been elected to represent the local community for the year ahead.
Paying tribute to his predecessor, the newly elected Mayor thanked Cllr Jones for his dedication and hard work, describing his tenure as “a breath of fresh air” for both the Council and the wider community.
The new Mayor, who has served as a Woburn Sands Town Councillor for many years (being Mayor of Woburn Sands before in 2012/13 – the year local resident Greg Rutherford won his gold medal at the London Olympics) David is also a serving Milton Keynes City Councillor for the ward in which Woburn Sands resides, expressed a deep sense of pride in being chosen to serve. Cllr Hopkins, in his mayoral capacity, emphasised a continued commitment to representing residents and working collaboratively with other Town Councillors, community organisations, and local businesses.
“In times of uncertainty, especially with so much happening locally with the new South East Milton Keynes developments, the future of East West Rail (which passes through the town) and the new MK City Plan, we must remain steadfast,” the mayor said. “It is business as usual at the Town Council, and councillors and officers alike are working diligently to secure the best outcomes for our area.”
Recognising the challenges faced by the local high street and community services, the mayor offered a message of solidarity: “To all our businesses, cafes, shops, schools, and community spaces – you are not alone. We stand with you.” Efforts to develop a refreshed Neighbourhood Plan are under consideration, aiming to help boost Woburn Sands high street and market and the surrounding areas for the benefit of both residents and visitors.
Looking ahead, the mayor affirmed a strong focus on community well-being, local sports, and mental health. “With mental health pressures at an all-time high, supporting and help create new local sports clubs is more important than ever,” the mayor noted.
The new Mayor concluded with optimism: “I look forward to facing the year’s challenges with my fellow Town Councillors, ensuring the best possible service and opportunities for all who call Woburn Sands and its surrounding communities their home.”
